Richter Scale Day marks the birthday of physicist and seismologist Charles Francis Richter (April 26, 1900 - September 30, 1985). His and Bent Gutenberg’s 1935 invention, the Richter Scale, is the standard for measuring earthquake magnitude.
Richter was born in Ohio but moved to Los Angeles in 1916. He attended the University of Southern California, later graduated from Stanford University, and received his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in 1928.
